One of the most exciting days of my life, because I can now say I AM A COLLEGE GRADUATE!!!!!!!! Can’t even believe how quickly this journey of school came to an OFFICIAL END. Excuse my journalistic tendencies, but I must expand on this topic:
My first two years of college were really tough, and I really didn’t ever see myself finishing. I had different dreams for myself, and I felt that school was getting in the way of those dreams. All my parents ever wanted was for me to finish college, since they never had the opportunity to go. They stressed the importance of a degree and a back up plan because they just wanted me to have a secure future. I constantly fought with my parents about wanting to put school on hold, and was so angry at them for pushing me to keep going. I’m not saying they didn’t support my dreams, they just encouraged me to do both, but it wasn’t easy. The more I realized that I had no idea where to even begin going into the professional side of the dance industry, the angrier I became towards my parents for not letting it be my main focus. But they knew I was capable of achieving both, so they kept pushing me.
Then one day, God put Cody back into my life, and everything seemed to be put into perspective for me. He was really ontop of school, and was so close to finishing. We were in the same grade, but with how behind I allowed myself to get, I was technically two years behind him. Then I asked myself “Hayley, what the heck are you even doing with your life? Look where Cody’s at, and look where you’re at.” Since I was little, I said I wanted to either work for a magazine, or be a news anchor, and these were things I knew I would never be able to do if I didn’t get a degree. So just before my third year of college, I became extremely motivated. I busted my butt for two years of Summer school classes, (all 3 sessions,) and two years of intersession classes during Winter break. And rather than finishing in 6 years like I was supposed to, I finished in 4 1/2.
I am so thankful that my parents pushed me to finish and made me realize the importance of it all. And I am thankful for Cody who encouraged me everyday to continue pursuing dance no matter how much I complained. These three people are the reason why I accomplished two goals I never thought I could have reached. I became a professional dancer during my third year of college, and have now acquired a college degree!
