And a very special thank you to our friends at Happy Jewelers, especially Gabe and Armida, who guided Cody in designing the perfect ring!
And lastly, thank you to my dad’s friend Rob (Hangar 21 Helicopters) for this experience!
After almost 5 years together, Cody and I got engaged on Saturday! (You can read about how Cody & I met, here.) I was so unbelievably clueless, it was embarrassing. My mom told me I needed to be home on Saturday, because my dad was going to get the “Officer of the Year,” award, and they were going to throw him a surprise party. Which he actually got 3 years ago, so I was like, “wow, again??” hahaha.
(Quick backstory: my dad’s good friend is a pilot, flies helicopters all the time, and owns an airport hangar. My dad has been wanting to take Cody and I on the helicopter ride for months, but we haven’t found the time to do it.)
My mom asked me to get my dad out of the house for at least an hour so she could decorate, and she goes, “Ok, I have an idea! Since your dad has been wanting you and Cody to go on the helicopter, he’ll take you over to the hangar, and Rob is just going to take you guys.” And then she told me to make sure I dress nice because the La Habra Journal was going to be at the party to take a picture of us. So I was like, “Oh great, my hair is going to be all messed up because of the helicopter headphones.” lol. Anyway, it was this huge plan, my mom would like whisper plans to me when my dad was in another room, text me about it, so it seemed legit, lol.
We head over to the airport hangar, get there at 3 pm, and literally take off right away. Rob says over the headphones, “Good job getting your dad out of the house. He’s clueless.” Little did I know, I was actually the clueless one, haha. I was snapchatting, sending videos of us flying over USC to my neighbors who go to school there, texting, you name it. Then we went over the LA skyline and circled around a few times, and that was seriously the coolest thing I’d ever seen. Lastly, we fly in front of the Hollywood sign, and naturally, I hold up my phone to take pictures, but Cody is tapping my leg asking if I can hear him, and I’m like, “yeah,” go back to taking pictures, and then he’s like, “Hayley,” and I look at him all annoyed because I was trying to get a good picture (lol,) and then he starts his proposal. I honestly thought it was a joke, and I full on laughed and said, “shutuuup” and went back to taking pictures of the sign… (Side note: he has jokingly proposed and used the same first line he used this day, so I sincerely thought he was joking!) Anyway, he starts again and pulls out the ring, and I was still so confused! It was a very surreal moment, like didn’t even feel like I was actually there, and was speechless. I still thought there was a surprise party for my dad! The flight home, I just kept smiling and was still in complete shock.
Once we landed back at the hangar, I saw about 60 of my friends and family waiting, and then everything pieced itself back together. My mom and neighbors helped decorate the airport hangar, had a taco guy, champagne, and everything. And to top it all off, the proposal was filmed on a Go-Pro, so that was also playing on the tv. (actually very embarrassing to watch, haha.) So we all ate, hung out, and listened to stories of how people found out, how they tried avoiding me so they didn’t spill, etc. My friend from high school is my hair stylist, and had even texted me a few days before saying “I think we need to do your roots,” but since I thought I would be out all day for my “dad’s party,” I told her I could go on Wednesday instead, hahahaha.
I still can’t believe how many people were behind this and how I had absolutely NO IDEA! Moral of the story, though, I’m so happy to have Cody as my fiancé. (So weird to say.) I met him when I was only 16 and had a crush on him the second I met him. Who knew that day, I was looking at my future husband! <3
