Do You Need A Fancy Camera To Be A Fashion Blogger? iPhone vs. DSLR

One very common question I get asked is, "Do I need to have a camera to be a fashion blogger?" or "What camera do you use?" To answer the first question: No! You definitely don't need a camera to be a blogger. While I do use my canon DSLR camera for all of my blog photos, 95% of the photos on my instagram were all taken on my iPhone. Even some blog posts are iPhone taken photos. Now to answer the second question, I use a Canon Rebel T3i with an 85mm lens. So anytime  we take outfit photos, we also take quite a few on my iPhone. I currently have the iPhone 8 Plus and if you're a blogger, and are going to mainly be taking photos for what you want to be your business on your iPhone, then I personally do think it's important to have the latest iPhone. I am on the NEXT plan with AT&T, where I upgrade every year, which I love because I know I'm upgrading to the latest camera.... it's also a business expense, so it's worth it to me.

What makes the iPhone photos look as good as they do, is definitely the fact that I edit them on Lightroom. (NOT the iPhone App version.) SO I edit both my DSLR photos and iPhone photos on there, and that's what makes them look so similar, as well. So whatever preset I use on my blog photos, I will also use on the iPhone photo that I'll post later that day on Instagram. And if you haven't heard, I do sell my exact presets that I use on Lightroom!! You can purchase them here.

The photos below are from our honeymoon and also taken on my iPhone. I actually bought a small canon camera for this trip, which was so pointless, because it took horrible photos, and I not only ended up using my iPhone for photo taking, I ALSO used it to record all of the videos for the Honeymoon video I made for YouTube! Because of how much I liked how that turned out, I also ended up using my iPhone to film my makeup tutorial

When it comes to shooting inside my apartment, I always think my iPhone photos turn out better. Plus, I know they'll fit perfectly in the Instagram rectangle (I never do the square anymore.) I mean, not that the photos look bad when taken on my camera, but do you see what I mean?

Agreed! I have a Canon, and I use it for my blog photos, but this is just a question I get a lot, so I wanted to show that they can still capture great images if they don’t want an expensive camera :)

  2. Your iphone pictures look so pretty. I have the iphone 5s and the camera is not great but i still use it for my blog.

Love this post. I currently use my iphone for all of my blog pictures and am completely fine with it right now. It is cheaper than buying a camera right now, and I love the way the pictures turn out. One day, I will invest in a nice camera, but for now, I am sticking to my iphone.

First I was thinking about buying a new camera (I have a Canon 500D) and I was thinking to upgrade to a Canon M3, which is smaller so your post kinda help also.
Second, I just loved your blog so much!

So glad this helped! I was thinking of upgrading my camera as well, and then realized how often I use my iPhone for instagram, so I decided to stick with the current one! Thanks so much for reading!! <3

Thanks for this post. I wanted some help on this matter and it finally came through from your blog. I have a Google pixel 2 and I love it’s camera and how vivid the colors it picks up. I recently bought a DSLR but end up using my my Google pixel 2 more. But DSLR doesn’t hurt to have too.

You dont, but it pays to have a good camera, especially when shooting outdoors, places with awesome and large backgrounds. And oh, your photos always look amazing dear. You’re so beautiful!

This post was everything for me! I am a pretty new fashion blogger (3 months) and the #1 thing I have been stressing about is my pictures. I understand how much the quality of your content matters and I don’t have the budget at the moment for a DSLR camera. I have a passion for blogging, so I try not to let it get to me, and just work with what I have, BUT this post & seeing your examples have put me at such EASE. Love you girl, keep doing you!

    • Hayley Larue says:

Yay! So happy to hear you enjoyed this post and glad you stumbled upon it!! It’s amazing what the iPhone can do and how great photos can turn out on them! :)

  8. Taylor says:

Seriously the iPhone photos look almost as incredible as the DSLR shots! I’m so impressed and it makes me want to use my iPhone even more to shoot photos. I have a Canon t3i with a 50mm lens (looking to upgrade soon), but I might start using my iPhone a little bit more!

The iPhone 11 Pro uses the same design language found on the iPhone XS, at least all of them except the camera department. That means the same 5.8-inch OLED screen, which has been improved in terms of brightness and contrast, but more on that in a moment, and you still get the glass-polished stainless steel chassis again. The rear glass has been hardened to withstand more bumps, water, and dust; however, it has changed to introduce a different camera section and get a matte finish, so it doesn’t reflect as much as its predecessors.
